New Moon Strategy
Hunt during the first and last light. Deer compensate for dark nights by feeding more during daylight. Morning hunts are often most productive 2-3 days around the new moon.
Full Moon Strategy
Hunt midday or during overcast conditions. Deer may feed heavily at night under the bright moon, but major solunar periods still produce movement. Cold fronts during full moon can be exceptional.
Quarter Moon Strategy
Focus on transition periods at dawn and dusk. Activity is moderate but consistent. Pay attention to weather patterns which may have more influence than the moon during these phases.

Which moon phase is best for deer hunting?
Many experienced hunters prefer the new moon phase for deer hunting. During new moon (no visible moon), nights are dark, so deer tend to feed more during daylight hours. This increases your chances of seeing deer during legal shooting hours. Full moon can also be excellent, especially during overcast days when deer may be more active.
How does the full moon affect deer hunting?
During a full moon, deer have bright nights for feeding and may be less active during daylight. However, overall deer activity is higher during full moon phases. Hunt during major solunar periods (moon overhead/underfoot) for best results. Cloudy full moon days can be particularly productive.

The rut is the deer breeding season, typically occurring in November for whitetails.
